A solid contender in the highly competitive mid-sized family sedan segment, 2016 Nissan Altima has a few tricks up its sleeve in order to stand out in the crowd. Its curvy style gives a more dramatic look to catch the eye, and both engine choices are strong not only in acceleration and performance, but get great fuel economy as well, not an easy feat.

The Altima gets several updates for the model year. Besides its new look, buyers have more safety features to choose from. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and rear cross-path detection are just a few advance tech options available for 2016. Finally, the number of trims to choose from expand from four to five with the addition of the Altima SR.

"If you want a roomy, comfortable family sedan with excellent fuel economy, handsome looks and easy manners, the Nissan Altima checks all the right boxes," write the auto experts over at KBB.

The engines mentioned above include a 2.5-liter inline-4 and a 3.5-liter V-6. Both carry over from the outgoing model. Output from the four-cylinder powerplant is 182 horsepower and similar amount of torque while the V-6 churns out 270 and 251 respectively. Both are mated to a continuously variable transmission to channel all that power to the front wheels. The EPA estimates Altimas equipped with the 2.5-liter engine to get an estimated 27 mpg in city driving and 39 mpg cruising along the highway.* Those with the V-6 only see a slight drop to 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

The equipment lists found at each trim level are quite competitive, especially the lower ones. The base 2.5 comes with such niceties as push-button ignition, power windows and door locks, and Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity. The automaker's exclusive Easy Fill Tire Alert system is also standard.

A rearview camera, a premium audio system, navigation and larger wheels are just some of the items found standard at higher trim levels. Siri Eyes Free allows passengers to access the popular iphone virtual assistant through the car's infotainment system. It's found in the 2.5 S. Leather upholstery can be had on the 2.5 SL. Features like a sunroof and the NissanConnect service and telematics systems are available either as a standalone or as part of an option package.
